Today, we were heading back to our minivan in the parking lot of a local home improvement store.  The Husband had BabyMuffin and Cupcake in the shopping cart.  I had Bito by the hand, and cut through a row of cars to get to ours.

Bito began whining that he wanted to go with Daddy.  The Husband called out that we were all going to the minivan but he just couldn’t fit through that row with the cart.  This did not pacify Bito.  He kept up saying he wanted to be with Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.

I’m kind of used to this…and I am okay with the fact that the kids often prefer Daddy.  Heck.  I prefer him myself!  But Bito was being unusually opinionated about it, so I stopped and had a little conversation with him.

“Why do you want to go with Daddy?”
“Because I want to.”
“Well, what’s wrong with going with Mommy?”
“Mommy…you’re a girl.”

My sweet firstborn said that to me?  I generally don’t take these things personally.   I know it’s a normal part of growing up…identifying with one’s own gender and such.  I was still surprised.

I think a little piece of my heart broke right then.

Awww, how absolutely adorably heartbreaking. Just wait til it’s not the fact that you’re a girl, but that your “old” that keeps them from wanting to walk with you…. then the peices of your heart they have broken into bits they suddenly stomp on!

From the day my son was born who has only wanted to me with my husband. He has been a Daddy’s boy from the moment he was born.
