Memorial Weekend. The unofficial start to summer has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love the hotter weather, lazy summer days to do nothing, the beach, cook-outs and time spent at the pool.
But Memorial Weekend is more than just the promise of summer and an extra day off from work…
We take a moment to remember the veterans who have served our country. In years past, The Husband and I have gone to the Memorial Bridge area of DC to see the Rolling Thunder ride into town. Sadly, we haven’t gone in two years. In 2006, we took Bito and baby Cupcake. The loud roaring of the motorcycle was too much for Bito and we left quickly as his screams could be heard over the loud din of the passing cycles.
Despite not going for a couple of years, we all enjoy seeing motorcycles along the Beltway and other area highways during this holiday weekend. I’m in awe of the unity shown by the Rolling Thunder. When the kids are older, I hope to make it an annual family event to see them ride across the bridge.
In the meantime, we’ll continue to wave to the riders as we see them around town. We’ll teach our children what the sight of them means, and how we have many fallen men and women to thank for our freedom.
