I love traditions and the holidays are a great time of year filled with many traditions. As a family with small children, we’ve been creating our own that I hope will be customs in our home for many years to come.
This morning, I celebrated a different kind of tradition. It’s one that has been going 14 (?)* years strong and has nothing to do with my family. Every New Year’s morning, a small group of girlfriends and I gather for breakfast at a local diner. This tradition started when three of the girls lived together many years back. I was invited to the breakfast 11 (?)* years ago when I became good friends with two of the gals in the house. I’m happy to say the only one I’ve missed is the year I lived overseas.
When we were young(er) and single, it was deemed that we should just roll right out of bed and go—no shower, no make-up and no worries since boyfriends (or prospective boyfriends) were not invited. Sweats and undone-hair was acceptable—and even expected! Even as newly-married wives, we would leave our husbands on the first day of the new year to share our first meal of the year with each other. And now that most of us have young children, we’re even more anxious to get away for a little while! We catch up on what we did for New Year’s Eve, talk about resolutions for the upcoming year and linger over coffee. What more could a girl want?
I hope this tradition continues for many years to come. My friendships are deep and the time is precious…this is a small way to truly cherish both.
* We’re not quite sure exactly how many years it’s been going on…but those are our best guesstimates.
